Boat Diving Trips in Cozumel

Pelagic Ventures Scuba offers small-group boat diving trips in Cozumel, Mexico, with a maximum of 8 divers per boat, fast dual engines, and PADI-certified divemasters. We have operated from ASIPONA Marina in San Miguel de Cozumel since 1994.

30 YEARS OF READING COZUMEL’S CURRENTS

A lot of dive operators run a fixed weekly rotation. We don’t. Every morning before we leave the dock, we check the current direction, overnight visibility conditions, and talk with the divers on board about experience level. Then we choose the reef that actually fits that day.

Cozumel’s currents run primarily north-to-south and can shift with the tides. After three decades diving these walls, we know which sites dive beautifully under which conditions, and we use that knowledge every single trip. That’s not marketing. It’s just what 30 years of local knowledge looks like in practice.

Daily 2- Tank Morning Trips

Our morning boat dives are the core of what we do. We depart from ASIPONA Marina, one of the most convenient launch points on the island, and we’re usually diving our first reef before the large resort boats have finished loading. Each trip covers two dives on sites matched to the group’s skill level, with a relaxed surface interval between them for water, snacks, and conversation.

When you get back to the dock, our crew handles the rest through our Valet Gear Service: we rinse and store your equipment, so you walk off the boat with the rest of the day ahead of you.

Twilight & Night Dives

Cozumel after dark is a completely different experience. The Splendid Toadfish, an endemic species found nowhere else on earth, calls from its hiding spots beneath the coral heads. Octopuses hunt across coral heads. Lobsters move along the reef edges. We’ve been running night dives here long enough to know exactly where to look, and on every dive, our PADI-certified guides stay close to ensure the group stays together and comfortable.

If you’ve never done a night dive before, this is one of the best places on the planet to try it. We brief you fully before going under, and we keep it small.

Private Charters

Sometimes you want the boat to yourselves. Our private charters are ideal for families, groups of friends, or dive clubs who want to set the pace, pick the sites, and not share their surface interval with strangers. You get the full boat, the full crew, and a dive plan built entirely around your group. Nitrox is available for certified divers on private charters, ask us when you inquire and we’ll confirm availability for your dates.

Small Boat. Fast Transit. First Entry.

Everything we promise about small groups and personalized diving comes down to one practical thing, the boat. A fast, purpose-built boat carrying 8 divers instead of 40 is what puts you on Palancar Reef and Columbia Deep before anyone else arrives.

While large resort boats run a 45-minute transit south with a full deck of divers, we are already descending. You enter undisturbed water, the turtles haven’t moved, and the reef is yours for those first critical minutes.

Every trip departs from ASIPONA Marina with onboard oxygen, fresh water, shade, and a PADI-certified divemaster who has dived these walls hundreds of times. Nitrox available for certified divers on request.

No Hidden Fees, And Zero Paperwork at the Dock

Whenever possible, we will provide you with the forms needed before you arrive so you can get the paperwork out of the way. This allows us to know your experience level and last time diving so you can arrive ready to dive and avoid any last-minute delays. We include mandatory additional fees, such as taxes and marine park entry in our prices. Many shops will exclude these from their quoted pricing and you’ll get a large surprise at the end. No surprises from us. We accept cash in USD or pesos as well as MC/Visa (there is a 5% service fee for credit).

Your booking includes:

  • Cozumel Marine Park daily entrance fee
  • 16% IVA tax
  • PADI-certified divemaster guidance on every dive
  • Valet Gear Service, we rinse and store your equipment dockside
  • Onboard oxygen, fresh water, snacks and shade between tanks

No surprises at the dock. No paperwork. Just show up ready to dive.

COZUMEL REEF SITE GUIDE

We dive these reefs constantly. Here’s what you can actually expect at each one, and how we work around the 2026 CONANP reef rotation schedule to make sure you always end up somewhere exceptional.

Reef / Site

Signature Feature

What to Expect

Palancar Reef

40–80 ft / 12–24 m

Towering pinnacles & swim-throughs

Palancar is Cozumel’s most iconic section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The coral and the swim-throughs are among the most dramatic we’ve seen anywhere in the Caribbean. We select the right section of Palancar for the day’s current.

Columbia Deep

60–100+ ft / 18–30+ m

Huge green sea turtles & blue-water visibility

Columbia is where you go for big animals and stunning open-water clarity. Enormous green sea turtles rest on the sand ledges, and the visibility regularly exceeds 100 feet. Best suited for advanced divers with solid buoyancy. Nitrox-equipped divers make the most of extended bottom time here.

Santa Rosa Wall

40–80 ft / 12–24 m

Dramatic drop-offs & barrel sponges

A drift diver’s dream. The wall drops away from about 50 feet into deep blue water, its face covered in vibrant barrel sponges and sea fans the size of dining room tables. A great site for intermediate divers building wall confidence.

Yucab Reef

30–60 ft / 9–18 m

Accessible, current-sheltered coral gardens

When CONANP closes a primary southern site for its 2026 rest rotation, Yucab delivers. Dense coral heads, abundant reef fish, and gentler currents make it excellent for all experience levels. We know this site as well as the flagship reefs.

San Francisco Reef

25–55 ft / 8–17 m

Shallow, colorful, wildlife-rich

Another high-quality alternative in our rotation toolkit. San Francisco’s shallow profile and rich fish life make it ideal when we’re balancing group experience levels or working around a primary site closure. Don’t let the shallower depth fool you — the biodiversity here rivals the southern walls.

Palancar Reef 40–80 ft / 12–24 m

Signature Feature: Towering pinnacles & swim-throughs

What to expect: Palancar is Cozumel’s most iconic section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The coral pinnacles here rise 30 feet or more from the reef crest, and the swim-throughs are among the most dramatic we’ve seen anywhere in the Caribbean. We select the right section of Palancar for the day’s current.

Columbia Deep 60–100+ ft / 18–30+ m

Signature Feature: Dramatic drop-offs & barrel sponges.

What to expect: A drift diver’s dream. The wall drops away from about 50 feet into deep blue water, its face covered in vibrant barrel sponges and sea fans the size of dining room tables. The current runs steady and predictable — a great site for intermediate divers building wall confidence.

Yucab Reef 30–60 ft / 9–18 m

Signature Feature: Accessible, current-sheltered coral gardens.

What to expect: When CONANP closes a primary southern site for its 2026 rest rotation, Yucab delivers. Dense coral heads, abundant reef fish, and gentler currents make it excellent for all experience levels. We know this site as well as the flagship reefs.

Your Dive is Protected, No Matter What the Reef Rotation Says

Cozumel’s reefs are managed by CONANP, Mexico’s national protected areas commission. As part of their conservation program, specific reef sections are periodically closed for rest and recovery. It is one of the reasons Cozumel’s coral remains among the healthiest in the entire Mesoamerican Barrier Reef system, and it is a practice we fully support.

What it means for your dive trip is simple. If Palancar is in its rest period on the morning you dive with us, you will never know the difference. After 30 years on these reefs, we know Yucab, San Francisco Reef, and every alternative site as well as we know the flagship walls. Same current knowledge. Same divemaster. Same quality of dive.

We pick the reef that morning based on conditions, boat density at the sites, and the experience level of the divers on board. That decision is never made from a printed schedule on a whiteboard. It is made by people who have been diving these waters since 1994.

Frequently Asked Questions

Year-round is the practical answer. Cozumel sits in a protected channel that keeps visibility high and currents manageable in most months. Late April through September tends to offer the calmest surface conditions and warmest water (82–85°F). December through March can bring northerly winds that affect the western shore, but winter storms tend to pass quickly. If you’re timing a trip specifically around diving, late spring is hard to beat.

Yes, and Cozumel is genuinely one of the best places to try it for the first time. We cap every boat at 8 divers maximum, and our PADI-certified divemasters stay close to newer divers throughout. We brief every diver on current signals, group positioning, and what to do if you get separated before we enter the water. Most beginners are surprised by how natural it feels.

We depart from ASIPONA Marina on the southwest side of Cozumel. It’s easy to find, and has parking nearby. If you’re staying in the Southern Hotel Zone, at properties like Iberostar Cozumel, Allegro, Occidental, Secrets Aura, or Fiesta Americana, we can pick you up directly from your resort pier. Just mention your property when you book.

Yes, Nitrox (enriched air) is available for certified divers on our private charter trips. If you’re planning a deeper dive day, particularly at Columbia Deep, Nitrox is worth considering for extended bottom time and a faster surface interval. Let us know when you inquire and we’ll confirm availability and any additional cost for your dates.
